I took my twin 4-year-olds in first class on a trip to Florida. It wasn't my original plane, but after having to change my flight, those were the only free seats. My real name is Constanza, and I always felt it was hard to say and spell by non-Spanish speakers. download the app Email address Sign up By clicking “Sign Up”, you accept our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy . We were in chemistry class and I was sitting next to one of my best friends in high school. Sometimes, I wonder if I'm erasing my immigrant identity by using a name that is "easier" for English speakers to say. Now that I'm a parent and I'm getting older, sometimes I feel like I'm doing a disservice to my heritage by not going by my real name.

The law dictates that people can't have more than three names, can't have last names as names, and can't be named exactly the same as a living sibling. There's even a list of approved names people can name their kids, featuring traditional names like Adriana and Lourdes and religious names like Abraham and Adan. However, we go by nicknames or variations of our middle names, which are all different. So my cousins and I are: Maria Cecilia, Maria Carolina, Maria Constanza, Maria Julieta, and Maria Eugenia. When it came to naming kids with my husband, we chose short and unique first names, and traditional Spanish middle names.

Read previewWhen my husband and I found out we were unexpectedly having a baby, we spent hours making lists of names. Once we settled on his first name, we then made a list of family names for his middle name. But when it came to last names, I told my husband that I was OK following the tradition of kids having only the father's last name. To break the cycle, I impulsively purchased a screen-less digital camera called Camp Snap that I saw in an Instagram ad. The camera has a small photo counter, which, so far, I've gotten up to 125 photos. When I purchased the Camp Snap back in November 2023 there was only a yellow option available. Because it's not a fancy camera and it wasn't super expensive, I wasn't stressed about them breaking it or messing up the settings. The Camp Snap has given them hours of entertainment.

I never dreamed of getting married, let alone having kids. When I met my now-husband, I saw how much he enjoyed spending time with friends' kids. I realized I hadn't wanted kids with anyone else but him. Never for a second did the "old me" that didn't want kids come out to question what was happening. AdvertisementJust like with his friends' kids, my husband is exceptional with our kids.

I want meals to be a time we are all present togetherI know taking kids out for meals is stressful and chaotic. I will often cart a bag full of crayons and blank paper because my kids love to draw. We have tons of Wikki Stix — short sticks covered in non-toxic wax — that allow them to make creations beyond coloring. I'm not here to say my way is better than anyone else's way, and I don't judge people who do choose to use screens during meals. For our family, it means no screen time during meals, which might also mean I will never have a warm meal again.
